Premium or Regular ?

Ok, does everyone here put premium in there car ? I always get these cars that say "PREMIUM ONLY" but in the US all cars have to be able to run on all gas types. I also believe they can not void your warranty for using less then premium. It says in the manual in much much smaller print that it is ok to use regular gas but it make reduce gas mileage. Its not so much the money but more so the principal of it. I kind of feel like a sucker buying into this "must run on premium". I've seen some posts on here stating that less then 91 octane can trip a warning, but I find this difficult to believe.

I always put premium...

Not really about the money either, however when I did have my M5, i could tell the difference between 87 and 91.. The BMW would misfire occasionally with the lesser grade, and it would also run a bit rough...

I do get tempted to put a lesser grade from time to time, but when you do the math, is an extra five dollars per filling, really money saved? I wouldn't want to find out the "hard" way... :D

You missed out the best fuel of the lot azrover.......................... diesel. The TDv6 may not be available in the USA, but it's a dammed fine motor and you guys don't know what you are missing!

I normally lose ~2 MPG using 87 octane near home... which is close to sea level and rarely over 100 ft. So, it defeats any cost savings. In Colorado (Denver & Colorado Springs), I was able to use lower octanes without impact... which is normal behavior for increased altitude.

The engine is designed with a higher compression ratio, hence the requirement for 91 octane in most environments. If you use a lower than necessary octane, the engine will not perform to specification. I use 91 at all times, as recommended. Feel free to experiment, especially if you are at high elevations... where it may not be needed.

"Land Rover" says 91 is the recommended minimum octane in North America... (RON+MON)/2. If your dealer says something different, that'll be their "personal" opinion.

Do note running higher than necessary octane is of little benefit, too. In fact, that can decrease mileage, too. (So don't use use 91 octane in stock 87 vehicles!)

FYI: 'Here' (Belgium) the LR book says minimum 95. At the pump, I can choose between 95 and 98. I thought the higher, the better and always use 98.
I have the impression my MPG is higher with 98, but I don't have enough miles (km) to be sure.
Is there a technical reason that the MPG should be higher with a higher octan ?

Is there a difference between US 4.2 SC and Europe 4.2 SC ?

No, but in europe they measure Octane differently then in the US. 95 Octane in europe is about 91 octane here.

Grommet -

My dealer seems to have lots of personal opinions such as the car doesn't need to be broken in either ;-).

Sorry for the confusion in "the rest of the world" vs the US. Typica US mentality not to think of anyone else but ourselves :(. I wish they had diesel here!!

for my knowledge, what are the typical US prices for Diesel and Gas ?
In Belgium:
Diesel around 1.00 EURO (= 1.22 USD) / liter
Gas Octane 98: 1.30 EURO (= 1.59 USD) / liter

I do not know the liter to gallon conversion...

1 gallon seems to be 3.7852 liter =>

diesel: 4.617944 USD / gallon
Gas: 6.018468 / gallon

I guess I dont really understand the logic here.... you have 60k+ to buy this car, but are trying to save 10 cents a gallon when you fill up at the price of damaging your car's engine??? Is that what you're saying?

Maybe you should stop brushing your teeth too, you'll save on toothbrushes, dentist appointments, insurance premiums, and even toothpaste!! You wont notice a difference for awhile, until your teeth start to discolor and the roots die, and then all your teeth fall out. But at least you wont have to buy toothpaste like all those other suckers!!

Good luck with that!

No, its not about saving the money, its about the principal of it. Why would I pay more then I have to ? It simply doesnt make sense. It doesn't matter if you have 1 dollar or 1 billion dollars or somewhere in between why be the sucker that is over paying ?

Why would they tell you that, if you really didnt have to? They dont get anything out of it, other than less angry customers coming in because they are putting in good gas. Makes no sense.

This engine needs a hi-octane fuel. By running a lower octane fuel, you are losing 15% to 20% of total engine power, and creating carbon buildup within the combustion chamber, as well as exhaust ports. The CPU will retard the timing to control detonation, which results in all of the above. Don't cheap out. This is a supercharged engine you're messing with.

Hey guys that use 87 octane... I put 87 in from when I bought my RRS Supercharged til I came across this poll. I put in premium for the first time and I could not believe the difference. It didn't start as cold sounding and it seemed that the enigine was a lot smoother. Before I started noticing a very slight sputter now its nothing but premium and it is worth every penny to do so.
