Inyo Mill, Echo Canyon,
Death Valley
The Inyo Mining Camp is at the end of the main branch of the 4WD road up Echo Canyon in Death Valley. Numerous ruins remain from mining operations dating from 1900 to the 1940's.
Metropolis Schoolhouse, Nevada.
Located in a remote corner of northeastern Nevada with the Ruby Mountains as a backdrop, Metropolis can only be accessed by may miles of dirt roads. In the 1920's a grand plan was developed for a town here with farms fed by water piped from the Humboldt River. The scheme died when water rights were greatly attenuated, but not before substantial building had taken place.
Austin, Nevada.
Although Austin is on the "Loneliest Highway", US 50, it is extremely accessible compared to most places depicted in this collection of images. It is the home of several picturesque old buildings dating from more prosperous times.
