Good idea? Your so smart. Didn't see we could post polls on here. I'm a rookie in these parts.

I read that the only ones having this problem were built on dates of april 18, 2002 to June 17, 2003. and July 2, 2003, to July 3, 2003. Can anyone say these dates are bogus. Also the VIN #'s are 3A101029 to 4A144905. Also how do you know whether a rover is within those VIN #'s? Thanks for the poll.

Diff Problems

Postby wcc18999 » Sun Mar 05, 2006 3:56 pm

2003 HSE with 20k miles. Took it to the dealer several times, and ended up replacing the diff. Traded the 2003 on a 2006. no problems so far with the new one (2k).

Well I saw art in it's greatest form tonight. As far as I know there are certain production dates and VIN #'s that have this diff problem. If the rover I saw tonight isn't within those dates I'm going to jump on it. The owner said he would have a dealer do a thorough check of everything to see if there are any problems to ease my concerns. She's an 04' white w/ tan interior, 22" forged rims from the dealer (so I'm guessing they are what goes well with the rovers (weight), heated seats, up graded leather, tinted windows that match perfectly, and it was a late 04' production (bought in May 04'). It was magic. I'm getting the stock rims with it so if I get sick of these 22's then I'll sell them and the stock on ebay and pick up the 19" 06' rims put some change in my pocket and forget about it. Nothing touches a rover. Hopes luck is on my side and I have no problems like some. Thanks for the info everyone and I'll post the picks when I get her.

John,

Thanks for putting up the poll.

May I suggsest that the results from this exercise will have little meaning without limiting the respondants to those with 25K+ miles on their vehicles. I will hazard to predict that you will see virtually all vehicles fail for this fundamental flaw between 25K and 40K miles.

Perhaps we can hear from those that have higher mileage (40K+).

A service manager at LR has told me that he has replaced the front diff in every RR III that they service (as well as out of town visitors) that has over 40K miles.

Looks like mine is set to blow up then.

My car has no issues, other than a vibration when the brake is depressed in Drive.

From reading the posts, there is little or no warning of the impending failure.

I agree anyone else done over 40k still on the same diff?

Gazzer,

I recommend that you get to your dealer ASAP and beg them to disassemble the front diff apparatus, inspect the splines, and replace if neccessary. One responandt on this board was successful with this approach, others (including me) have not been successful.

Good luck!!

2005 HSE with almost 20K miles. No problems.

It would be interesting to see the results from 40K mile trucks...

I have a little experience in formulating poll questions for real polls and it is very important how you phrase the question.

You have two options either break the question into parts by year or by mileage.

For example.

Year 2003 Range Rover Diff failure yes
Year 2003 Range Rover Diff Failure no
Year 2004 Range Rover diff faliure yes
Year 2004 Range Rover diff Failure no

So on and so forth. You need 8 questions to cover all MYs.

Doing it by mileage might be more accurate and give you more info but I don't know if you have enough poll options to get as much accuracy as you would like. I would break it up in 10,000 mile increments starting at 20,000 miles.
Less then 20,000 miles diff failure yes/no
Less then 30,000 miles diff failure yes/no
Less then 40,000 miles diff failure yes/no
Less then 50,000 miles diff failure yes/no
Less then 60,000 miles diff failure yes/no

You need 10 questions to cover up to 60,000 miles in 10,000 mile increments.

Also keep in mind that 2006 Range Rovers are totally different then 2005 and under Range Rovers and hopefuly should have no issues.
