Rear Door Seals Leaking

Postby trackgrip » Mon Dec 19, 2005 12:54 pm

I'd like to hear from anyone who has the same problem with water getting trapped between the inner and outer rear door seals. After heavy rain when I open the rear doors water will pour out where it has got trapped between the inner and outer door seals. At the moment it does not leak inside.

My dealer tells me that it is a "characteristic" of the vehicle and nothing can be done. I don't believe this so if anyone else has this problem please respond to this posting with details of model and age. I will then take it up with Land Rover as I live 5 miles away from the factory and have contacts !

My car has done this since new. I thought it was a bit annoying but then I thought it was quite cool how each door has a double door seal. I had never seen that on a car before.

I had assumed that the water being trapped in the seals was inevitable but if it isn't I'd certainly like to know about it so I can get it fixed!

Don't these Google ads look awful!

Same "problem" here, Td6 Vogue from September 2005. I don't see what the problem is. You want the door seals to be tight when you drive through a river, so I expect them to neccessarily work in the other direction too.

Door Seal Update

Postby trackgrip » Tue Dec 20, 2005 3:02 am

Thanks for the feedback guy's, it's now obvious that this is more common than I thought. I have arranged for my vehicle to go back into the factory to be investgated by the design team. This will take place early in the new year so I will post an update 2nd week of Jan.

Feedback From Factory on Water Leaks

Postby trackgrip » Sun Jan 08, 2006 3:48 am

Well my vehicle went back into the factory 2 days ago and was investigated by the design team responsible for the door seals on the Range Rover.

They told me that they found the problem within 5 minutes of putting it through the water test. They confirm that I had a substantial water ingress on both rear doors, which was caused because the doors were not sitting on the seals correctly. They readjusted the door alignment and guess what..... no leaks.

My Dealer originally reset the doors in an attempt to solve the problem but in fact made matters worse and then (after 3 more visits) came up with the statement that water leakage was a "Characteristic" of the vehicle and nothing could be done. Land Rover will now be contacting my dealer directly as they were unhappy that the Dealer was making such statements about a problem that was clearly unacceptable and so easy to correct.

Now for anyone who has a similar problem I can tell you that I have spoken face to face with the engineers that designed the vehicle and they say that there are no design problems with water leaking into the front or rear doors. The engineers told me that you can get droplets of water, which catch on the metal loop that the door closes onto which then dribbles down the plastic trim around the loop. You should only get a trace of water here and it is not cause for concern. This is the so-called characteristic that dealers often refer to. If you have anything more than this then take you veichle to the dealer to get it fixed. If you get pushed off with the “This is a Charateristic of the Vehicle” story then tell your dealer to take a hike and insist that they contact Land Rover Technical Assistance and talk to the Range Rover Door Sealing and Water Ingress Team based at Land Rover, Lode Lane, Solihull, UK.

I hope that this information will be useful and if anyone wants to discuss this in more detail then please send me a personal message.

Thanks for your definitive answer trackgrip. The next time it has rained hard I think I will take a short video clip of the water pouring out of the bottom of the rear doors when I open them and show them it at the annual service along with a printout of your message.

It's been 10 weeks now since Land Rover fixed my leaking doors and I can confirm they have been totally dry since. We have had plenty of heavy rain during this period so I am convinced they fixed the problem.

trackgrip- I have been working with my local dealer to resolve an exact issue and they have not been successful. Land Rover USA, according to my dealer, has no records of any recommended fixes. With that said, my local dealer is willing to contact anyone in Land Rover UK to try to figure this out. Can you email your contact info (your dealer or whoever you talked to)? The dealer is willing to do anything to fix this issue. They were amazed by the amount of water that poured out 45 minutes after a carwash!!

Many Thanks,
ray

Update: my dealer had my RR for a week and has been working with UK's LR thru the local US rep but could not figure out what is causing the leak.

I just found the following notice on National Highway Traffic Safety Administration site ( http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/tsb/ ). Can anyone help me get the actual bulletin?

Rear door seals leaking

Postby Safeglide » Thu May 18, 2006 6:12 pm

Got that problem too. Dealer's reply: District rep said nothing can be done because there is no TSB on that subject for a 2003
