Classic Sump Plug Size

Postby RED » Tue Oct 30, 2007 10:06 pm

I want to fit my 2 Classics with Fumoto oil drain valves, but I have been unable to find out definitively the size and thread of the sump plug - even tried calling Land Rover in the UK without success!

Anyone know the sump plug specs?Thanks RED[/b]

And the answer is - well I decided to buy a spare sump plug and give it to one of the engineers in our machine shop at work; the response is it is not a standard anything! 20.5mm or ~13/16 and 14TPI BSW thread, in other words, it is an orphan and none of the Fumoto oil drain plugs will fit. However, the engineer did have a good suggestion, drill out the standard sump plug and tap it so that one of the smaller size Fumoto valves can be screwed into the old plug.

Hi
I fitted drainvalves from http://shop.difflock.com/range-rover-dr ... -p-42.html to my Classic and P38. They are very well made, and certainly with the Classic save a lot of mess.

Thanks Mik; I have ordered the plugs from the link you provided; will save me a lot of work in drilling and tapping sump plugs!

Rover V8 3500 sump plug size is 1/2" BSP, just had a tap through my P6B sump thread to confirm for a chap on the P6ROC forum who is asking the same and looking at these "no mess" drain valves but i also pointed out that the threaded boss which protrudes into the sump has two small holes through the thread to allow the residual oil held back by the protrusion of the boss into the sump to drain out so i'm thinking that these no mess drain valves when fitted will block these holes off and you won't get a complete drain allowing sludge to build up over time?? which you otherwise would not clear unless you dropped the sump. not sure if the new valves would accomodate/compensate for this, just thought I'd let you know. I'm still using the standard sump plug by the way.

p.s. I only have a P6B but would like to have an early 2 door rangie one day...

Scott

I'd like to see some pictures of the Rover - I'd gladly have a P6B.

my pleasure Danny/rufant,

My 1974 P6B 3500; (you guys use the same web format as the P6ROC forum)

Image

and the sump plug threaded boss on the inside of tht sump pan;

As sombody pointed out on the P6ROC forum, to make effective use of the "no mess" type drain valves it would be an idea to have another boss made up and braze this on the other side of the pan on the outside so you have a smooth inner surface to fully drain all the oil.

Regards,

Scott
