Mark Adams Rechipping or Haltech Interceptor?

Postby 996TURBO » Tue Nov 03, 2009 1:24 pm

Hi,

A friend of mine has rebuilt a GEMS 4.0 with top hat liners, piper 285 camshaft, stage II heads and more...
It's obvious that stock ECM cannot cope with all those performance mods.

If i understood well :
-Mark Adams Chip is a bespoke chip with a longer range for every parameter in order to accept performance mods.

-Haltech Interceptor is a piggy back module that transform incoming and outcoming ECM signals in order to benefit of the mods but lure the GEMS as with a stock engine. That module is said to be user friendly programmable.

Prices are very similar but i understand that Haltech Interceptor allows much more mods than a chip but with many rolling road sessions.

Any help on this costly choice?

Regards

Florent

I had Mark Adam's chips in my 1998 4.6 before I rebuilt it recently. The rebuild is to 5.0 litre to stage three specifcations: high comp, fully ported and matched heads etc - the full monty - I spoke with Mark Adams prior to my rebuild about this issue - there is an upgrade chip/map for my circumstance post the rebuild which I have ordered from RPI. My understanding is that the GEMS will work fine with a situatiion such as yours. However, that understanding is not based on any technical understanding - I'm still at the uneducated enthusiasts stage! With mine, after the rebuild, once the adapative values were reset if was fine - predictably didn't like it before the adapative values were reset but believe you me if you drove it you would know that it handles it no problem. I wanted to know about this issue because it had been suggested to me that the rebuild would require a new engine management system - Wolf here in Melbourne was one that was suggested to me. It seems to me that that was not necessary.

There were some threads back in time - perhaps 6 months or so - about this general topic I think.

I forgot to mention in my last post that before the rebuild I had a piper torque max camshaft.

The thing is my friend doesn't get power under 3500 RPM so he always need to kick it.
With a free flow custom exhaust, let me tell you that the beast isn't discrete around town.

As part of my rebuild I had to rebuild/upgrade the torque converter - I think/suspect for the reasons you describe?

I understand your comment about the exhaust - I think my neighbours understand even better!

A chip provides an enhanced map and typically cannot be re mapped easily. Therefore if your engine chracterisitcs doesn't match the engine the chip was designed for you will not get the maximum benefit. The haltech full or interceptor (or others) can be tuned therefore offers benefits over dedicated chips as you individual engine chractersistics can be tuned to maximise performance, economy etc. I experienced a 30hp at the wheels from a haltech system and can vouch for it.
